Flykkiller EP

Very cool moody, videogame-style techno withunstoppable beats. Sounds like a remix of Metroid Gameboy soundtrack. And it's Creative Commons licensed.

Flykkiller_EP.jpg

http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/flykkiller

FlyKKiller is the second collective project of musical collaborators Stephen Hilton and Pati Yang. Separately they have been at the forefront of avant-garde electro music, both bringing a wealth of experience into a band that in such a short time have already been seized upon as pioneers of the genre.

For their new project, the cannily titled FlyKKiller, the pair set about recording a studio album with (as legend would have it) an extraterrestrial called V; which when you hear the outcome of these sessions you can understand where such claims might come from. The gallant and incessant beats that have become the backdrop to Yang’s howling, stirringly poignant and harmonic vocal were, again as the myth insists, recorded by V who created these cubes (whilst in captivity in the FlyKKiller Institute in Poland) as a vessel in which to pass on her peaceful communications to us earthlings. However the otherworldly sci-fi cubes have been seized from her by her captors at The FlyKKiller Institute, and sold to fund their scientific research. Additional information is being presented via download and physical formats.

Ken Peel

Sweet ambient electronica beats with a lot of ambient noise in the background.

http://www.kenpeel.com

Biography: As a child, Ken grew up to the sounds of Bert Kaempfert, James Last and The Carpenters. When he was 7 he started playing the recorder and when he was 8 he started piano lessons. As a teenager Ken was listening to Brian Eno, The The and David Sylvian whilst mucking around with synthesizers and strange 80s bands. By the time he was 20 he had quit teacher training college and was working as an IT programmer and using his income to fund his expensive music technology habit.

During most of his 20s Ken played in bands, some serious, some less so, whilst following opportunities as they came up to earn a crust. In 1996 Ken moved to Bristol and hooked up with local musicians Adam Smith, Paul Ramos and Vicky Burley. Two bands emerged that were trip-hoppy and jazzy and cool, but they caught only the faintest of interest from ‘the business’. Ken immersed himself in a new found love of jazz legends Charles Mingus, Kenny Burrell and Lee Morgan, then bought a computer and decided to see what he could do himself.

In 2003 he contributed a track to a compilation of Art of Noise covers. An album followed in 2004 entitled ‘Salary Man’, released under the name ‘ Avon’ and featured some of his previous collaborators. The moniker ‘ Avon’ was in reference to the anti-hero of cult 80s BBC sci-fi show Blake’s 7 which was being repeated on UK Gold at the time. Ken currently prefers Space 1999 for vintage sci-fi kicks. Salary Man attracted wide-spread critical acclaim, but was not a ‘break through’ album commercially. Salary Man did, however, bring Ken’s talents to the attention of DJ Nick Luscombe who brought Ken in for a live performance on his show ‘Flomotion’ on XFM. Listening to the show was radio producer, DJ and promoter Ben Eshmade, who was producing chill out show ‘The Chiller Cabinet’ on Classic FM at the time and got Ken in to write a new set of jingles and idents.

A short, 5 track EP followed in 2005 entitled ‘The Cut’, which included the track ‘Prelude’ – used for a major cinema and TV advertising campaign for Axe/Lynx in the USA. In 2006, Ken released his next CD, Marginal – this time under his own name. Tracks from Marginal have been played on chill-out shows all over the USA, in Canada, Russia, Japan, Switzerland, Denmark and the UK. In particular, Marginal has been a firm favourite on UK digital station Chill. Ken’s music has also been popular on student radio in Canada and the chill-out internet station Calmscape in Denmark who nominated Ken ‘most promising artist of 2006’.

Ken rarely plays live but when he does you can find him in his local haunt of the Tobacco Factory in Bristol and performing as part of the ‘Arctic Circle’ in London – a community of contemporary musicians, DJs and VJs. In addition to The Cloud of Reason, 2007 marks the beginnings of two new artistic collaborations. Ken is currently writing a set of tracks with Swedish multi-instrumentalist folk musician David Stiernholm and co-writing pop songs with Bath-based singer/songwriter Ollie Smith. Ken Peel is married, is a dad and lives in Bristol, England.

Hush Collector

Hush Collector was formed in Brighton UK by Poppy Gonzalez (ex Mojave 3/Sing-Sing pianist) and songstress Katie Mummery. Introspective, restrained and spacious, they create music of a potent melancholic beauty. The songs generally take a lethargic tempo and shimmer with warmth and melody. Hushed vocal harmonies which as one reviewer put it 'see the the girls duetting with supernatural intuition' are occasionally broken up with the odd sonic outburst, while a hint of country noir lurks quietly in the wings. Perfect for the after the party and the morning after Hush Collector are essential listening.

The first songs recorded at Church Rd Studio Brighton, were released on the 'Flowby ep' via their own 'Candy Cone' label. This prompted an invite to play a live BBC session and resulted in a debut sell-out gig followed by a live acoustic performance on Brighton's Juice FM. Hush Collector are currently concentrating on recording the full length album.

a Crack in Time and the Break of Dawn

Very cool experimental music improv and visual art. I am very impressed with the concept of a "virtual album", especially when it incorporates video and audio. Crack in Time's got a pretty trippy philosophy going on. They ask some questions better left for Friday nights with Kava Kava tea:

How fast is the grip of time(in our exsitence)? Are we running away from the past and craving for the future? When is the time to stop? What do you have that does not disappear when you do?

crack_in_time_band.jpg

On the 19. of August 2005 a group of artists and musicians gathered with the purpose of creating a virtual album based on improvised experimental music and visual art.

The 'Crack in Time - Virtual Album' has become a 1 hour long journey in music and film through the highlights of the unforgettable event that took place on a summer-weekend in the deep woods of Norway.

It is now available live online! For the symbolic sum of just 1$ you can experience this spectacular event from your own living room in full-screen format.

Solidaze

Wow, a Nordix Traxx, downtempo Winnipegger. Very cool.

Description:
Solidaze embraces urban beats and natural rhythms in both his house and downtempo journeys. Always infused with deep soul and a muted electro sensibility his work resonates with even the most discerning listener.

Biography:
Solidaze, the primary recording and production pseudonym for Luis Francisco Cardona, embraces urban beats and natural rhythms in both his house and downtempo journeys. Always infused with deep soul and a muted electro sensibility his work resonates with even the most discerning listener.

solidaze.jpg

Paying attention to detail, Cardona is just as comfortable doing live PAs and mashups for the dance floor as he is recording in the Balanced studios. His live sets incorporate his own material intertwined with the full spectrum of house and a dose of Latin flavours. His production and engineering can be found in every level of the Balanced catalogue as an artist as well as in the final mastering stage. This last year has been focused on the long awaited full length Pleasure from Precision featuring the vocals of Sarah Michaelson (aka Mama Cutsworth).

Cardona moved from El Salvador to Winnipeg with his family when he was 10 years old. It was through this massive cultural change that his eyes were opened to contrasting worlds and their music. Quickly becoming impassioned with electronic music, he was led into production where he has released music under the names Duende 6, Solidaze, Orquesta Del Sol and Metesthetics. Cardona's work can be found on Nordic Trax's Button Down Beats as well as each instalment of Balanced's Northern Faction series. He compiled, mixed and mastered the Solidaze Sessions which featured Viva's Jon Lemmon and Pure Space's Joe Silva. Co-founding Winnipeg's Balanced Records, Cardona has established himself as a mainstay in Winnipeg's producer culture and the point man for digital audio expertise.

These guys have a cool, sad sounding way about them. Dreamy ambient soundscapes with a heavy techno influence. And you can tell by the way they eschew capital letters that they're sensitive people.

Sally Cooper

Just found this pretty fantastic jazz singer, Sally Cooper. Her initial song took me aback, since I wasn't really expecting to hear anything good today. I pasted a sampling of her songs into this post, and I hope to get a CD from her at some point. That'd really be cool.

Biography: Australian Sally Cooper is a full time Professional Internationally touring songbird, who's music crosses over the R&B/Folk/Jazz and Blues genres. Her sensual and soaring vocals consistently offer a spine tingling delivery of both popular song interpretations and the emotive themes in her original songs.

Drifting in Silence

Interesting music from "Drifting in Silence" and composer Derrick Stembridge's self-proclaimed beatless and atmospheric ambiences. Very minimalist. We'll see if we can get them to send us a CD.
